Respiratory Illness
We are here to help you stay healthy this season and beyond. Knowing what to do and who to call can help you feel your best.
What Is Respiratory Illness Season
People get sick with the flu, COVID-19 and RSV most often during respiratory illness season. This season usually starts in late fall and ends in early spring.
Respiratory illnesses happen when germs get into the lungs and airways through your eyes, nose and mouth, and make you sick. Many respiratory illnesses share the same signs. Anyone can get sick, but some people have a higher risk, such as:
- infants and children younger than 2
- adults age 65 and up
- pregnant women
- people with long-term health problems (like diabetes, heart disease or asthma)

What Can I Do to Stay Healthy This Season?
Start Strong: Make a Plan
Talk with your doctor or care team to learn about all your options to stay well. Then choose what fits you best. A personalized plan can help you feel sure about the choices you make for you and your loved ones. The best part? Preventive care visits are always covered by Nebraska Total Care.
Stay Well: Take Simple Steps
Even small things can help keep you healthy. Wash your hands often. Use hand sanitizer when you can’t wash with soap and water. Try not to touch your eyes, nose and mouth. Cough and sneeze into your elbow. Stay away from others when you are sick.
Stay Protected: Consider Covered Vaccines
Nebraska Total Care covers preventive vaccines, so you can stay protected without worrying about the cost. This includes shots for flu, RSV and COVID-19. Talk to your doctor about what may be right for you. Your doctor may recommend one or more of these vaccines to help prevent serious illness based on your current health risks.
Feeling Unwell? Choose In-Person or Virtual Care
If you do get sick, you have options for care. Virtual care lets you connect with a provider from wherever you are. Sometimes sooner than an office visit. Or schedule an in-person visit with your doctor. We offer both, so you can focus on feeling better.
