Watch for healthcare scams

Date: 04/25/23

Heritage Health (Medicaid)

There are many healthcare scams out there. Often the crook will pose as a government person to get you to give your info. They want personal info related to your Medicaid account. They may use this for identity theft. In other cases, the crook wants your health insurance or Medicaid info to submit fake medical charges.

A scam can start with an email, text, or phone call. The message looks to be from a government agency. Crooks use a variety of stories. Sometimes the fake “agent” tells you they need to update account info to send a new medical card. The crook may ask for your account number in exchange for free equipment or services.

Tips to avoid scams:

  • Do not trust a name or number. Crooks use official-sounding names or mask area codes to make you trust them.
  • Hang up and go to official websites. You can view your info in the secure member portal.
  • Never share personal info with someone who has contacted you unsolicited. Do not share info with strangers over the phone, by email, or on social media. This includes bank and credit card info, birthdate, Social Security number, or health insurance numbers.
  • Guard your account numbers. Never offer your Medicaid ID number, Social Security number, health plan info, or bank info to anyone you do not know.
